Michele Bauer, LCSW, explains how our human ancestral history and development still impact our mind’s process today. “Most of us aren’t fighting saber tooth tigers for our food or chasing buffalo on plains to try to get dinner for our families,” she explains. “But believe it or not, our brains still respond to stressors as if that was happening.” She goes on to describe that as we age, the stressors in our life change, but reframing what stresses us in positive ways can be a practical step in mitigating its impacts on our health.
